HEIN, Piet Pietersz
(1577–1629)
   Famous naval officer who started his career in the service of merchants. He also worked for several years as a captive on Spanish galleys until he was freed in 1608. During the Revolt, Hein took part in the Dutch conquest of San Sal vador in 1624. As vice admiral, he was especially successful in the Caribbean, where he seized several Spanish ships. The most impres sive conquest was the Spanish fleet of ships with silver in the Bay of Matanzas, Cuba, in 1628. In Dutch historical memory, his fame is comparable with that of Adm. Michiel de Ruyter.
